What is ChessVS?

Chess, reimagined. ChessVS is competitive chess with a twist: every match is real chess, but each of your pieces carries a collectible ability card that can change the game. You still have to checkmate your opponent — but how you get there is now a strategy puzzle layered on top of the board you already know.

If you can play chess, you can play ChessVS. If you've never touched a chessboard, the game teaches you both at once.

The one-sentence version

You play normal chess. Each turn you may also activate a card — a special ability tied to one of your pieces. Cards bend the rules in your favour, but chess always has the final say: no card can save a lost position.

The three things to understand first

  1. Cards are abilities, not new pieces. A card might let your Knight strike from one square further, or let your Rook shove an enemy piece aside. Your Knight is still a Knight. (Battle Cards →)

  2. The Tension Gauge gates your power. Stronger cards only unlock as the game heats up. Early game you have light tools; late game, when the Tension Gauge is high, the dramatic cards come online. (The Tension Gauge →)

  3. Chess skill still wins. Cards add depth and comebacks, but a player who is simply better at chess will beat a player relying on cards. ChessVS rewards both — board skill and card strategy.

Who runs ChessVS?

ChessVS is built and operated by ChessVS, Inc., a Delaware C-Corporation. The game runs on the Base network so your cards and boards are items you genuinely own and can trade — but you do not need to understand crypto to play. Account creation handles all of that for you behind the scenes. (Wallet Onboarding →)
