XP, ELO & Rank Tiers

ChessVS measures progress through three separate systems. They are deliberately disjoint โ€” each system uses different tier names so the rankings can't be confused.

SystemWhat it measuresResets?
ChessVS Rating (ELO)Your chess skill โ€” your matchmaking strengthCarries between seasons
XP RankYour seasonal activity โ€” playing, quests, puzzles, eventsResets each season

ChessVS Rating โ€” the seven ELO tiersโ€‹

ChessVS Rating is your matchmaking ELO. It moves up or down with every ranked match โ€” a zero-sum number that places you against players of similar skill. Carries between seasons โ€” skill doesn't evaporate.

TierApproximate ELOFeel
NoviceBelow 1,000Brand new โ€” calibrating
Apprentice1,000โ€“1,199Learning the systems
Intermediate1,200โ€“1,399Comfortable with cards
Advanced1,400โ€“1,599Confident competitor
Expert1,600โ€“1,799Strong, consistent
Master1,800โ€“1,999Highly skilled
Grandmaster2,000+The very top of the ladder

ELO ranges are typical, not strict gates โ€” your ChessVS Rating tier follows your actual rating.

ELO carries; tier rewards are seasonal

Your ELO rating itself follows you between seasons. Seasonal tier rewards and cosmetics are claimed per season, so each season is a fresh competition for the top.

XP Rank โ€” the five seasonal tiersโ€‹

XP Rank measures cumulative seasonal activity. Unlike ELO it isn't zero-sum: every player can reach Legend if they play enough at a high enough win rate. Resets every season.

TierXP RangeUnlocks
Scout0 โ€“ 24,999Blitz bracket access, practice board, FOCUS earn begins
Challenger25,000 โ€“ 59,999Standard ranked queue, deck slots open up
Veteran60,000 โ€“ 99,999Ranked tournament access, club material variants
Champion100,000 โ€“ 149,999Grand Championship qualifier, full material variants, marketplace rebate
Legend150,000+Grand Championship direct seed, Legend Drop NFT, GM Star, season-exclusive cosmetics

XP Rank is a separate track from ChessVS Rating โ€” they can be at different levels. A player with a high ELO who plays sparingly will sit lower on the XP ladder. A player with average ELO who plays a lot of ranked matches will climb XP faster.

Account tierโ€‹

The account tier is set by FOCUS burned and gives you a head start on the in-match Tension Gauge. There are three levels:

  • Debut โ€” free, default for every player.
  • Midgame โ€” unlocked by burning FOCUS.
  • Finale โ€” unlocked by burning more FOCUS.

See the Tension Gauge page for what each level grants. Account tier resets to Debut at the start of every season.
